Second European Market
International casino operator BetMGM is set to continue its European expansion in the Netherlands. The global brand launched in the UK in 2023 and has been a roaring success in the country so far; it has now been confirmed that the Netherlands will be its second European market, with an official launch date still to be announced.
International Expansion
International expansion has been the name of the game for BetMGM over the last 12 months. The iconic brand’s expansion in the UK has seen it quickly establish itself as a major player in the market, and it will look to mirror this success in the Netherlands.
The company will continue to use the LeoVegas Group’s platform to facilitate the launch. The expectation is that the same games and sports markets will be available in the Netherlands as in the UK. Kambi will be powering the company’s sportsbook as part of its ongoing partnership with LeoVegas.
Gary Fritz, the President of MGM Resorts International Interactive, described the move as a key part of the company’s international expansion. He said that they are thrilled to launch in the Netherlands and build on the success of other international markets.
A Tougher Market
The Dutch market has never been far from the headlines since its official launch in late 2022. The Netherlands has been quick to apply strict regulations, with a total ban on gambling advertising recently being passed by the Dutch government.
A vote was also passed to ban online slots and games of chance in mid-April. This will raise concerns for operators and has also started a debate over whether or not it will push Dutch players into the hands of unregulated operators.
This law has still not been officially passed, with Franc Weerwind, the minister for legal protection in the Netherlands still needing to approve it. However, this approval stage is believed to just be a formality.
