Ontario Online Gambling Surpasses $200 Billion Amid Sports Betting Slump

Global Online Gambling Market Expected to Exceed $100 Billion by 2025

A Growing Sector

Ontario’s regulated online gambling market has surpassed a significant milestone with more than $204 billion being wagered on regulated sites since the launch in April 2022. In that time Ontario has generated $8 billion in gross revenue and $1.6 billion in taxes for the province.

The $200 billion landmark was achieved despite a seasonal slowdown in June as betting activity dropped last month following a record-breaking May.

Recent figures from iGaming Ontario reveal that players wagered $7.26 billion in June 2025. It is a 21.4% increase on June 2024 but 10% down from the $8 billion wagered in May. May was the highest monthly wagering total achieved since the launch. The June dip is an expected typical summer downturn, but the province’s overall online gambling sector continues to grow in player activity and operator revenue.

Online Casino Growth

Online casinos drive the growth as they account for 88% of all wagers placed on regulated platforms last month. That’s a total of $6.36 billion spent on casino games. This means casino spending is up 25.2% compared to the same month last year. $6.36 billion on casinos is an 8% decline from May 2025, but 88% is the highest proportion of total betting volume taken up by casinos in the market’s three-year history.

Operators earned $243 million in gross gaming revenue (GGR) from online casino activity alone in June. This accounts for 80% of the total GGR for the month, $306.8 million. The online casino figure is a 41.5% increase from the $171.5 million recorded in June 2024. It suggests operators have become increasingly effective at monetising casino play even as wagering volumes fluctuate.

Sports Revenue Dip

Wagering on sports dropped to $768 million in June, the lowest level in 10 months. This figure accounts for 11% of total betting activity, which is the joint lowest market share since April 2022. June experienced an absence of playoff games involving Canadian teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers, which were ongoing during May.

The revenue from sports betting dropped too. Operators pulled in $58.4 million, which is down 7.7% from June last year, and 19% lower than May 2025. It is the third time this year that sports betting revenue has fallen below the previous year’s figures. The dip is likely due to the lack of a major summer tournament. Last June, Canada’s unexpected run to the Copa América semi-finals may have driven increased betting activity. Drake publicised a $300,000 bet he placed on his home country beating Argentina in the knockout-stage match.

In June, Ontario recorded 1.01 million active iGaming accounts. This is up 21% year on year but the lowest levels since November 2024, following three months of consistent decline. Operators earned on average $303 per account, just like most of this month’s figures, which is higher than June last year but down on May just passed.
