Age of the Dogs Slot Review

Age of the Dogs is not short on mechanics. The whole slot is built around the idea that one of the divine dogs can turn an ordinary spin into chaos. Some of that chaos is useful.

Cascading Wins

Every winning cluster disappears after it pays, and new symbols drop into the empty spaces. If those new symbols create another cluster, the process repeats. This is standard cluster-slot behaviour, but here it matters more because dog features can reshape the board mid-spin and give cascades much more room to grow.

Wild Symbol

The Wild substitutes for all regular symbols and helps complete clusters. It does not replace Scatters or Dog Symbols, which keeps the feature logic clean. Several dog mechanics can also create extra Wilds, so this symbol ends up doing more than just occasional filler work. 

Dog Symbols

There are four Dog Symbols in the game: Ares, Hermes, Artemis, and Poseidon. Only one of each type can appear on the reels at a time, and each one has its own effect.

1. Ares expands the grid by one reel and one row, then turns into a Wild. The grid can grow up to 10x10. In the base game, it resets back to 7x7 after the win sequence ends, but during Free Games the expanded size carries over between spins. That is a huge difference, and one of the reasons the bonus has much better upside than the base game.

2. Hermes moves across the grid and drops between 3 and 10 Wilds in random positions. He cannot place them on spaces already occupied by Wilds or Scatters, which stops the feature from becoming completely unhinged.

3. Artemis transforms up to 3 different symbol types into one chosen symbol type. That chosen symbol is tied to an active winning combination, or the highest-paying one if there are several. It is one of the stronger setup features in the slot because it can quickly create oversized clusters.re

4. Poseidon triggers a respin. Winning clusters, Wilds, and Scatters stay locked in place while all other symbols are replaced. If new wins form, another respin is awarded. This can snowball nicely, especially on an already expanded grid.

Free Games Feature

Landing 3 Scatters anywhere on the reels triggers Free Games. Before the feature starts, there are five options to choose from:

• 10 Free Games with 1 Dog per spin
• 5 Free Games with 2 Dogs per spin
• 3 Free Games with 3 Dogs per spin
• 1 Free Game with 4 Dogs per spin
• A mystery option that chooses one of the above at random

That choice gives the feature some actual personality. It is not fake choice either. More spins with fewer dogs will feel steadier, while fewer spins with more dogs can get wild very quickly. Retriggers are unlimited, and the number of extra spins depends on the option originally selected.

The best part is that the grid does not reset between Free Games spins. So if Ares has pushed the layout bigger, that expansion stays in place for the feature. That alone gives the bonus much more bite.

Barking Bets

Barking Bets is the slot’s boosted mode. It increases the chance of landing Dogs and also improves the chance of triggering Free Games, but it costs an extra 20% on top of the normal bet. That can be worth using if the goal is faster feature access, though naturally it also means the bankroll gets chewed through faster. The clue is in the name, really.

Feature Buy

The Feature Buy lets you jump straight into Free Games for 100x your stake. That is a standard enough price for a bonus buy, and it makes sense in a slot where so much of the upside sits inside the feature. As usual, though, buying access does not mean buying a good result. It just means skipping the waiting room.

Age of the Dogs could have been a lazy joke slot. Dog gods, Greek columns, a bone-shaped button, job done. Thankfully, Playtech actually gave it decent mechanics.

The 7x7 cluster format already makes it feel different from the endless line-based mythology slots floating around, and the four dog features each do something useful rather than existing just to look cute. Ares is probably the standout because grid expansion up to 10x10 changes the whole shape of the session, especially in Free Games where that growth sticks around. Artemis and Hermes are no passengers either, and Poseidon adds the sort of locked-respin pressure that can suddenly make a board look much better than it did a second earlier.

It is not perfect. Playtech keeping volatility and max win under wraps is irritating, and the dog animations, while good-looking, can drag a bit if someone prefers faster play. But as an actual slot, not just a concept, this one has more going on than expected. It feels playful without becoming silly, feature-heavy without becoming unreadable, and different enough to stand out in a very crowded mythology category.
