Aztec Tower has Yggdrasil take us to the jungles of Central America, where a 5-reel, 5-row slot awaits. This one is actually a scatter pays game, meaning winning symbols can land on any position on the reels so long there are 5 or more. However blockers complicate things, even if they may be removed through the Remove Blocker enhancer. What does this involve? Continue reading our Aztec Tower review to find out more, of course.

Aztec Tower is a scatter pays game set on 5 reels and 5 rows. If you’re not familiar with this type of slot it means winning combinations are formed by landing 5 or more symbols anywhere on the slot game grid. Position doesn’t matter here, just the amount that hits the grid. The exception here is the blocker symbols, which as the name suggests do not form winning combinations but instead block you from doing exactly that.
Winning symbols explode, leading to a cascade with new symbols dropping in the empty space. This can lead to new inning combinations, in which case the process repeats as one of 4 random enhancers is triggered. Such mechanics serve a highly volatile game nicely, even if the RTP is just 94%. Operators can set this to even lower values, so check the paytable before you start playing. Betting starts from £0.20, while wins can reach up to 8,664x your stake.
This slot is available at a wide range of online casinos in the UK. To help you decide where to play it, here are the best slot sites hosting the game today:
Yggdrasil adopts a chunky visual style for Aztec Tower that echoes the architecture of the titular civilisation. The game itself is built out of mossy stone work, with 5 mysterious gems on top and a wheel on the left-hand side. The symbols are in a similarly sculptural style, while the surrounding jungle sways with the breeze. Add the animations that kick off whenever you land a winning combination and you get a game with quite the sense of life.
There are 10 paying symbols - the high-paying jaguar, snake, and eagle, the dagger, amulet, and chalice mid pays, and the flame, leaf, sun, and water gem low pays. The wild can substitute for all of these symbols with the exception of the scatter, which can trigger the free spins if you land 3 or more. The last symbol on the reels is technically not a symbol but a blocker. This does not form winning combinations and can only be removed from the grid through the Remove Blocker enhancer, a special feature we’ll explain further on in this review.
Before that we need to check the values of the paying symbols.

The Aztecs might have built their temples using massive slabs of stone, but Yggdrasil builds its games using HTML5. This makes Aztec Tower perfectly playable on any device that can handle an internet browser. That includes, of course, your smartphone or tablets. The visuals even adapt automatically to fit the smaller display, ensuring it is playable no matter the device you’re using.

Cascades are key for Aztec Tower’s features, as these both boost the round multiplier and trigger 1 of 4 random enhancer features. There are also free spins triggered by landing 3 or more scatters.
You’ll notice the multiplier wheel located on the left-hand side of the game grid. This grows with each cascade, and can reach a maximum of 250x. Once the spin is over the final multiplier is applied to the payout before it resets back to 1x for the next spin.
The multiplier may also be boosted randomly before the symbols hit the grid. This is known as a “Temple Ascension” and the green gem above the grid flashes before it is triggered.

Cascades don’t only lead to the multiplier growing, as they also trigger 1 of 4 random enhancers. Only 1 enhancer can be triggered at a time, no matter the amount of winning combinations in the cascade. The enhancers are as follows:

Landing 3 scatters awards you with 8 free spins with an initial round multiplier of 1x. The multiplier does not reset between free spins, while the number of maximum blockers on the grid is decreased from 10 to 5. Enhancers are active during the free spins, and like regular spins are triggered whenever you get a cascade. Free spins are played with the same bet as the triggering spin and landing a scatter adds +1 spin to the total.
Before you start the free spins you can take a chance and gamble the round for a higher starting multiplier. There are 3 gamble options, each with a higher multiplier. Once you decide your option you get a spin of the wheel. Land on the green section and you win the higher multiplier, but land on the red and you lose your free spins. The visuals of the wheel are an approximation of your chances of winning.

This reviewer is something of a fan of both scatter slots and cascade mechanics, making Aztec Tower quite a winner in his book. Admittedly the RTP is low at 94%, but the high volatility leads to exciting spins especially once the cascades get going and the enhancers do their magic. It arguably does nothing new, but every one of its components is rock solid and a max win of over 8,000x is nothing to sniff at.
