Whereas Reactoonz and its sequels are cluster slots, Play’n GO returns to basics in Dr Toonz - or that’s what it wants you to think, at least. Dr Toonz is a 6-reel, 4-row game with a total of 4,096 paylines, but this can grow all the way up to 262,144 during the free spins round and its additional symbol feature.
Paylines are formed by landing 3 or more matching symbols on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reels. Winning symbols are removed from the reels, leading to a cascade with new symbols dropping to fill the empty spaces. If this leads to new winning combinations then the cascade process repeats. Cascades also add 1 charge to the Quantumeter, which can activate random game modifiers. We’ll detail these further on in our review.
The RTP is a matter of concern. This is because, like some other Play’n GO slots, it can vary between slot game. Dr Toonz Symbols and Audio & Video Design
Being a prequel to the Reactoonz series means Dr Toonz brings some changes to the visual style. It’s mostly familiar, mind, but we see smaller versions of the creatures inhabiting the test tube-style reels, not to mention the addition of the titular Dr Toonz character. He sits in a hovering vehicle on the left-hand side of the screen which, in turn, holds the Quantumeter charge. Once fully charged this will blast a ray on the reels with its modifiers, leading to plenty of fun animations and effects.
We’ve already mentioned the Toonz creatures, and there are 8 different ones here. The slightly bigger creatures with two eyes are the high pays, while the low pays have just one eye. The glowing purple atom symbol is the atom, which can substitute for all symbols except the DNA scatter. Landing 3 or more scatters triggers the free spins. Quantumeter
Dr Toonz’s flying machine holds the glowing Quantumeter. It randomly starts with 0, 1 or 2 chargines on each regular spin, and is charged by 1 spin with each cascade. This way it can reach up to a maximum of 3 charges. Once fully charged the Quantumeter fires one of these 3 modifiers randomly on the reels:
- Quantum Wilds - Adds 2-6 wilds to random positions on the reels.
- Metamorphosis - Transforms 5-8 symbols of a random type into another. This excludes wilds or scatters.
- Disintegration - Destroys all low pays in view and adds 2 wilds to the reels.
Free Spins
Landing 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatters will award you with 10, 15, 20, or 25 free spins respectively. During the free spins the Quantumeter starts with 1 or 2 chargers, and continues to charge up as mentioned above. In addition, you’ll get a 2x symbol that will randomly appear above any of the reels. This will double the number of symbols in that reel, boosting the number of available paylines as a result. Get a 2x symbol over all 6 reels for the maximum number of paylines, which is 262,144. The free spins cannot be retriggered, however.
Dr. Toonz Final Thoughts
Play’n GO brings a pleasant twist on the Reactoonz formula with Dr Toonz. The fun visuals immediately bring you back to this universe, while the video slot gameplay impresses with its high volatility, solid win potential, and random modifiers through cascades and connected Quantumeter mechanic. It all makes for a great time overall, especially once you manage to activate the free spins round.
The main issue, really, is the variable RTP, and it’s only made even worse with game versions that won’t even let you check the RTP you’re playing at. This shouldn’t be too much of a problem if you happen to be a fan of the series - as mentioned both gameplay and win potential are solid - but we’re all for transparency in slots. As such we’re docking half a point from this one, as we believe players should be allowed to easily access all pertinent information regarding the games they play.
