RetroVerse Slot Review

With a name like “RetroVerse” you can expect some proper retro stylines, and Push Gaming doesn’t disappoint here. The game takes place in an arcade, with the grid set in a proper cabinet. Suitably chiptune music and sound effects play as you spin, with the reels filled with videogame-themed pixel art symbols. 

Since we’ve mentioned the symbols we might as well point them all out. There are 6 paying symbols that consist of 3 handheld consoles in red, orange, and pink, and 3 controllers in green, blue, and gray. The arcade cabinet wild can substitute for these paying symbols and holds a random multiplier ranging from 1x to 10x. There is also a full selection of special symbols, including mystery box wilds, light guns, and magnets, but we’ll tell more about these further on in this review.

RetroVerse is a truly feature-rich slot, one with plenty of special symbols as well as a free spins round complete with a collection feature. Let’s take a look at what all of these involve. 

Wild Mystery Symbol

As well as regular wilds RetroVerse has Mystery Wilds. These remain on the reels and grow by a level when making part of a winning cluster. If a Mystery Wild achieves all 3 levels then it will transform into either a multiplier wild, scatter, or magnet symbol. 

Instant Prize Symbol

As the name suggests the instant prize symbol will award you an instant cash prize if you land a cluster of 5 or more. The number on the symbol indicates how much it is worth when multiplied by the current bet, and can range from 1x to 500x. 

Magnet Symbol

A magnet symbol attracts all instances of a random paying symbol on the reel to its position on the grid, creating a winning cluster. It can also potentially attract instant prize symbols if there are 4 or more in view, as well as any wilds and mystery wilds. 

Light Gun

The light gun removes 2 random paying symbols from the grid. 

Free Spins

Landing 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatters award you with 6, 8, 10, or 12 free spins respectively. These are more of a hold and spin feature, as the reels only hold wilds, mystery wilds, instant prize symbols, magnets, and extra spin symbols together with blanks. Instant prize symbols stick to the reels when landed, while any extra spin symbols will award you with either 1 or 2 additional free spins before turning into an instant prize symbol with a random value. 

Mystery wilds may transform into Collector symbols during the free spins. This collects the values of all instant prize symbols in its cluster before removing them from the grid. Another possible mystery wild transformation is the Multiplicator. This boosts the values of all adjacent instant prize and collector symbols by 2x, 3x, 5x, or 10x before transforming into a random instant prize symbol. 

Once the free spins are over the values of all instant prize symbols on the reels are added up and the total applied to your current stake and awarded as a payout. 

Colourful and rich in features and ideas, RetroVerse makes something of an ideal cluster slot. The high volatility means wins can sometimes surprise you as they come rich and fast (after a good number of losing spins, of course), and the free spins further impress with their unique hold and spin-style mechanic. The only issue with one is the RTP, specifically how it can vary between operators.
