Nolimit City goes for something different with San Quentin Manhunt. The gameplay now is in the scatter pays format, meaning wins can be formed by landing symbols anywhere on the reels. What you need to do, instead, is to land at least 7 symbols of the same type. Winning symbols are removed from the reels, leading to a cascade as new ones drop to fill the empty spaces. If this leads to new wins then the cascade repeats until there are no more winning symbols in view.
The setup of San Quentin Manhunt is also unusual. This is a 6-reel game, but rows are in a 1-3-5-5-3-1 configuration. San Quentin Manhunt brings a change in perspective compared to the previous San Quentin slots. After all, it features a bird’s eye view of the infamous prison’s yard, where we’re told the prisoners are planning to break out. The atmosphere is as grim and gritty as you expect, and is especially enhanced by the surprisingly excellent music that plays as you spin the reels.
The reels hold 10 paying symbols - 5 prisoner high pays and the soap, jar, shiv, handcuff, and toilet paper low pays. Look out for the guard tower, which is the scatter. This appears on reels 2, 3, 4, and 5, and when landed will open the Enhancer cells on its reel. You can also trigger the slot game’s free spins round if you land 3 or more scatters. Enhancer Cells
On top and bottom of each row you’ll find a row of locked Enhancer cells. Land a scatter and you’ll unlock the 2 Enhancer cells on its reel. The following special symbols can land in an Enhancer cell once it’s unlocked:
- Cake Buster - unlocks a reel position to reveal a wild. If there are no locked positions on the reels left then it turns a random symbol into a wild.
- xWays - transforms into a prisoner symbol that reveals 2-4 symbols of the same kind. If more than one xWays symbols hit on the same spin these reveal the same prisoner.
- xSplit - doubles the multiplier block value of its reel before transforming into a prisoner symbol.
- Yard Dealer - turns an object symbol on the reels into a higher paying symbol before turning into a prisoner.
- Cell search - activates in the case there is no win on the reels. This collects all instances of the lowest paying symbol, adding a multiplier for each converted symbol, then turns into a wild. The multiplier values on collected positions are doubled.
Guard Tower Bonus
Landing 3 or 4 scatters anywhere on the reels awards you with a free spins round. There are 2 different features here, depending on the number of scatters landed.
- Sewer Escape Spins - triggered by landing 3 scatters. This is a round of free spins, with the number of spins based on the opening Bonus Setup Mode. All locked reels get a random sticky multiplier of up to 16x, while any unlocked Enhancer cells remain open for the duration. Any unlocked reel positions also remain open between spins. Land 2, 3, or 4 scatters for +2, +3, or +4 spins.
- Manhunt Spins - includes all the features of the Sewer Escape Spins, only with Multiplier Block values capped at 512x. In addition, corner Enhanced cells unlock once all locked positions on the reels in their respective corners are unlocked.
San Quentin Manhunt Final Thoughts
We can only commend Nolimit City for shaking up the San Quentin formula in its third entry. After all, we’re sure it would have been easy enough for the developer to simply spice up the maths and visuals of San Quentin 2: Death Row and call it a day, right? Instead Nolimit City went for something new based around the scatter pays mechanic, and the results are absolutely tremendous. We do miss the ground level perspective of the previous San Quentin slots, but this is replaced with fresh bonus features and big win potential, and as such we had a blast with this one.
