How The Closure Unfolded
The Commission suspended the operating licences of both BresBet Ltd (licence number 065252-R-340096-002) and Bet St George Ltd (licence number 067818-R-341699-001) with immediate effect on 28 August 2026. The suspension followed Commission enquiries that identified suspected social responsibility and anti-money laundering failings at both operators, and it was made under section 116 of the Gambling Act 2005, placing both licences under formal review.
During the suspension, customers of both operators could still access their accounts and withdraw funds. The Commission expected both companies to treat consumers fairly, keep them fully informed, and ensure no consumer was unnecessarily disadvantaged.
On 4 September 2026, one week after the suspension, both BresBet and Bet St George surrendered their operating licences entirely. A licence surrender is permanent: it ends the licence rather than pausing it, and it means neither operator can resume trading in the UK under these licences.
Two Brands, One Ownership Structure
BresBet and Bet St George are linked companies. Both operate under what their founders call the "Brescorp" umbrella, and Companies House records list both companies at the same registered office in Sheffield. Nic Brereton founded BresBet and was Chair of Bet St George, and was an active director of both companies. Sarah Jane Laycock resigned as BresBet's managing director and from her role at Bet St George on the same day earlier in August 2026, shortly before the Commission's suspension.
BresBet has held a UK gambling licence since 2021. Bet St George launched in the UK market considerably more recently, going live around March 2026, meaning it operated in the UK for roughly six months before the suspension and closure.
What This Means For UK Players
For anyone who held an account with either operator, the closure is now permanent rather than a pause. Players who had funds in either account during the suspension were able to withdraw them, per the Commission's stated requirement.
