Early Pay Out
It has been a tough week for Sheffield United and its fans. The team was comfortably defeated at home by 6-0 by Arsenal on Monday night, with the visitors being 5-0 ahead before the half-time whistle.
Chris Wilder’s team have now conceded five or more goals at home on four occasions so far this season. They have been defeated 5-2 and 5-0 by Brighton, 5-0 by Aston Villa, and now 6-0 by title-chasing Arsenal. The Blades have become the first ever team in English football history to concede five or more goals at home in four consecutive matches.
A Dismal Season
Popular bookmakers Paddy Power have rubbed salt into the wound by confirming they will now pay out any bets on Sheffield United to be relegated, with 11 games of the campaign left to play.
The Blades are currently 11 points from safety, with Burnley and Luton, the other promoted teams from last year’s Championship, also in the relegation zone. Their next game is on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to Bournemouth.
Things do not look like they are going to turn a corner any time soon, with the Blades being the lowest scorers in the league, hitting the net just 22 times in 27 games, and have also conceded the most at 72.
Breaking the Wrong Records
While they can not beat Derby County’s low points record of 11, which was set in the 2007-2008 season, they could beat the most goals conceded record, which currently sits at 89, just seventeen goals short of Sheffield United at the moment.
Other bookmakers, while not paying out early, have The Blades as very heavy favourites to go down. Sky Bet, for example, currently have Wilder’s men priced out at 1/250 to face the drop.
