The UK Gambling Commission's second phase of updated deposit limit requirements takes effect on 30 September 2026, three months later than originally planned. From that date, every UK-licensed online gambling operator must offer customers a clearly defined "deposit limit": a spending control based only on money paid into an account, never on winnings, losses, or withdrawals.
What Changes From 30 September
Under the updated rules, operators must:
- Offer customers the option to set a gross deposit limit, calculated purely from money deposited into the account.
- Reinstate a gross deposit limit option for any customer who had previously removed it.
- Label this specific limit type as a "deposit limit" and use that term for no other kind of financial control.
- Display the gross deposit limit option with equal or greater prominence than any other financial limit offered.
- Offer the gross deposit limit only on fixed time frames. Other limit types, such as loss limits, may still be offered on a rolling or fixed basis.
These requirements sit within the Commission's Remote Technical Standards and follow an earlier set of changes that took effect on 31 October 2025. Those earlier rules required operators to prompt customers to set financial limits before their first deposit, allow easy review and modification of those limits, and send reminders every six months.
Why The Deadline Moved
The Commission originally set 30 June 2026 as the date for the full deposit limit definition rules to apply. On 26 May 2026, it confirmed a three-month extension to 30 September 2026, stating the change followed stakeholder feedback and was intended to give operators more time for technical development and compliance work.
Helen Rhodes, the Commission's Director of Major Policy Projects, said the wider deposit limit changes would bring "consistency and clarity for those consumers choosing to set deposit limits, while still supporting gambling businesses to offer customer choice for different forms of limits."
What It Means For UK Players
For players, the practical effect is straightforward. From 30 September 2026, any UK-licensed operator must let a customer set a deposit limit based purely on how much they pay in, not on a calculation that offsets winnings against deposits. This limit must be at least as visible as any other spending tool the operator offers, and it must be available on a fixed weekly, monthly, or other set period, rather than as a rolling total only.
Operators can still offer other types of limit, including loss limits that account for winnings and withdrawals, but only the gross deposit limit may be described using the term "deposit limit." Anyone who previously removed a deposit limit from their account must be able to set one again.
The change applies to the definition and presentation of an existing consumer protection tool. It does not alter licensing requirements, affect which operators are regulated, or change how self-exclusion and other responsible gambling tools work.
