Mark Bowen, the Head of Operations and former manager of Reading FC, has been charged by the FA in relation to alleged betting breaches.
Bowen is alleged to have placed 45 football bets over an 18 month period.

Bowen’s alleged breaches saw him place football bets between April 19th, 2022 and January 14th this year. It has been confirmed that none of the bets involved Reading, though, the exact nature of the bets has not been revealed.
The FA rules, which are designed to uphold the integrity of the sport, state that players, coaches, and officials connected with any football clubs in the top eight tiers of English football can not gamble on any football matches worldwide. It is not clear whether Bowen’s bets were placed on matches in England or abroad, but the severity of the rules is clear.
Another Betting Scandal
The relationship between football and betting has intensified significantly over the last two years. This incident concerning Bowen is just one of several high-profile cases that has shone a light on potential issues regarding betting’s place in football.
Just last week, West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta was charged by the FA for his involvement in a betting scheme, with the FA allegedly calling for a lifetime ban from the game for the Brazilian.
This followed a major scandal earlier in the season involving Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, as well as last year’s case with Ivan Toney. As a result of these, the involvement of betting companies in football has come under scrutiny, with the Premier League set to ban front-of-shirt sponsorship for betting companies from the beginning of the 26/27 season.
